In 1874 he travelled to Marseilles, where he served in French merchant vessels before joining a British ship in 1878 as an apprentice. In 1886 he obtained British nationality. Eight years later he left the sea to devote himself to writing, publishing his first novel, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eAlmayer's Folly\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, in 1895. The following year he settled in Kent, where he produced within fifteen years such classics as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eYouth, Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Typhoon, Nostromo, The Secret Agent\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eUnder Western Eyes\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e.
